Monsoon Forest
(East Java & West Bali)

The drier forests of the far eastern part of south-east Asia. This is where the last native monkeys are found before you enter the Australasian region!

This forest is a type of the Indo-Malayan drier seasonal forest & woodlands that grow across the mainland of south-east Asia, however, it is so geographically isolated that is has many of its own species, such as the 'Bali Starling'. If you travel further west, the rainfall increases and you end up in the classic and widespread Indo-Malayan lowland rainforest. If you travel east in the other other direction, and cross over into Lombok and beyond into the Lesser Sundas, you end up in the Wallacean Dry Forests. These are only a short distance away, but they are in a different biogeographical realm.

A small amount of this dry forest is protected in the Bali's only national park: Bali Barat National Park.
