Refugio Los Volcanes,
Bolivia

Not a series of volcanoes, but a lodge set in what looks like a ‘lost valley’, surrounded by dome topped (sandstone?) cliffs. The vallley and views look differet depnding on rain and mist or sun and blue skies

There are a variety of walks, most with views, some with river crossings. The locals guides mostly speak Spanish, but are keen on the forest and spotting wildlife if you wish. You are discouraged from doing the walks by yourself, but there are a few strolls to some nearby waterfalls and creeks, and around the grounds if you want a more peaceful option. The accommodation and food are very pleasant.

Around the grounds are Jay, Black Phoebe and Agouti and Runners.

On the walks you will probably see Military Macaws flying past and streams of Green-cheeked Parrakeet.

The lodge doesn’t allow you to drove the last few kilometres into the valley, so you can leave your car at the village on the hghway or close at the mirador (view) to get picked up at set times.

If you are drivng from Samaipata (less than an hour) or the city of Santa Cruz (three hours at least), you might want to leave you car at the town on the main highway rather than 4WD it to the mirador pick-up spot. If it rains while you are at the lodge, this road becomes tricky
