Miyako Island
Japan

A nice place to snorkel, to see some interesting northerly coral reef species of fish, as well as some more widespread familiar species...

Most people probably don't think of snorkelling when they think of Japan. But southern Japan includes a run of islands that stretch into warmer waters. halfway between Taiwan and Okinawa lies Miyako Island, a very flat island with a range of white sand beaches and beautiful slightly upraised limestone coastal sculpturing. I had a chance to visit here with expedition company Noble Caledonia, and even though it was slightly cooler water than I am used to, this meant I got to spot a few different marine species, as the coral is at one of it's most northerly distributions.
