Spiders

so you want to find spiders?

well, you're a bit strange!

no, just kidding: there are some beautiful and spectacular specimens around to be found...

types of spiders to look for...

There are lots of different interesting groups of spiders to be found...

the giant "tarantulas" of south American rainforests. (these are to find, but you can see the evidence of their feeding in the leaf litter as the chicken-like scratchings on the forest floor the next day)

the large "bird-eating" and/or "Barking spiders" of tropical Australia and New Guinea

the subtle but pretty 'lichen spiders' (these spiders have the colour and outline of lichen, and live pressed flat up against the tree trunks in rainforest on tropical Australia and south-east Asia),

among some of the prettiest spiders, are the 'Spiny-back spiders', (these tiny spiders are common in webs in tropical gardens all around the world)

and the largest web-living spiders, the Golden Orb Web spiders

Places to see spiders:

Generally the tropics are the best place, and some very pretty spiders are common even in gardens. In fact, they are probably easiest to see in these places, as they provide plenty of trees, but with regular open space as well.

(Australia) - The Cairns Botanical Gardens.

(South-east Asia) - The Philippines Eagle Centre.

(New Guinea) - The 'spider caves' outside of of Alotau
