South-east Asia
perspective...
I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel in south-east Asia for guiding, expedition cruising and lecturing work, for research for a book on tropical rainforest, for photographs for lectures, and also just for holidays...
the region...
South-east Asia is a beautiful region with rich tropical rainforest, wildlife, amazing food, and wonderful people.
It is also very cheap and safe to travel, with a dense network of transport that allows easy access to many places.
defining the area...
There is a biogeographical region known as the (tropical) Oriental region, which includes tropical Asia, from India across to the Philippines, down to just west of New Guinea. Within that area is a region often known as south-east Asia, which is most of tropical Asia, but without India.

The natural vegetation of much of the area is tropical rainforest. And even though much of it has been cleared, and continues to be destroyed, there are many amazing places to be experienced and wildlife to be seen.
South-east Asian rainforest
In the centre of the region is the country of
Malaysia.
This includes one of my favourite spots to enjoy the tropical rainforest is
Taman Negara (National Park)
In the Malayasian state of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, there is another great place for wildlife, called
Bako National Park.
There is also the country of the
Philippines,
a nation made up thousands of islands. There is coral reef to be found, such as at
Panagsama.
There is also jungle to be explored, from the lowland rainforest around rivers, such as on the island of
Bohol
, to the highland forest of Mt.Apo.
