Savannah of Northern Australia

The section covers the savannah (also spelt savanna). It can also be described as "tropical open woodlands" and "tropical grasslands".

This habitat type is found all around the world, most famously in Africa, but also Central America, India, and northern Australia.

And all around the world, savannah has similar features. For example, it has an open canopy with widespread trees, and a grassy understory. It is effected by grass fires every dry season, and may flood during the wet season. There are many obvious herbivores, from termites living in their mounds, to large grazing mammals.

However, the species of plants and animals are different.

Savanna in Australia

For example, the dominant trees of the open canopy in the Australian savannah are various species of Eucalyptus.

The grassy understorey can be home to snakes, including some of Australia's most venomous snakes. Knowing this, people often ask: How do I recognize the venomous snakes?

The open canopy and big Australian sky in the savannah country means that birds of prey are commonly seen.
What kinds of birds of prey are there in Australia?

This open habitat is also home to many species of kangaroo and wallaby.
How many types of kangaroos are there?
