Borneo
personal experience...
I have been lucky enough to backpack around Borneo and also visit as a naturalist on an expedition ship.
access...
There are various ways to access this island. Get to Singapore first. From there are many cheap flights all over Asia, including Malaysian and Indonesia Borneo.
The island is divided between three countries, including
Malaysia
(Sabah and Sarawak),
Indonesia
(Kalimantan) and Brunei.
natural history and wildlife...
It is famous for it's rich tropical forest and various endemic species such as Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey, and various Pitcher Plants.
where to go...
There are a number of very good national parks and other protected natural areas in Borneo, including
Kinabalu National Park,
which includes the
Kinabalu Heaquarters,
the nearby associated
Mesilau,
Poring Hot Springs
, Sandakan & the Kinabatangan River and
Bako National Park.
tours..
It is pretty easy, safe and relatively cheap to get around Borneo these days, especially the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. However, there are also lots of organized tours you can join, and many packages that includes lodges.
For those with limited time and mobility, and a bit of money,
Orion expeditions
has also started off a regular season of different itineraries that go all around the coast of Borneo, organized by expert biologist guide Mick Fogg, who is often aboard as a Guest Lecturer or expedition Leader.
I will add more details as I visit more areas in Borneo on my next time off in February 2012....
