Wyndham Caravan Park
Kimberley,  Australia

The most comfortable and convenient place to see Gouldian Finches!

personal experience...

I have visited this place a couple of times in 2016, 2017 & 2018.

the grounds

The park is small, but surrounded by beautiful native bush.

The bird-watching is great around the grounds, but really good just near the small drinks shop and at the dry creek behind the caravan park.

birdwatching

At the 'cafe' there are a few chairs and tables. The owners have set up a bird bath and a seed bowl.

On a typical dry season day, many species of honeyeaters and finch visit the water bath, and various parrots and pigeons visit the seeds.

There are four species here on one tree!

It is also a great place to watch bird behaviour, including drinking, feeding, enjoying the water, and fighting....

a Bar-breasted Honeyeater yells at a Brown Honeyeater so loudly it falls off it's perch (Damon Ramsey)

Wyndham Caravan Park is one of the best places to find and watch Gouldian Finches. This is a very striking and relatively rare grass-finch. I have seen the bird here (but not photographed it).

the bird species

Because finches feed on dry seeds, they need to drink every day. By the end of the dry season they may crowd around what small water holes are left. So this bird bath gets very busy at the end the dry. Finch species I have seen here include Double-barred Finch, as well as..

Long-tailed Finch (Damon Ramsey)
Masked Finch at the bird bath (Damon Ramsey)

and of course the highlight, Gouldian Finch...

Honeyeaters include...

a Rufous-throated Honeyeater shows off it's the feature that gives it it's name (Damon Ramsey)
Brown Honeyeater, enjoying the sprinkler at the end of the dry season (Damon Ramsey)
Bar-breasted Honeyeater, enjoying the sprinkler at the end of the dry season (Damon Ramsey)
White-gaped Honeyeater (Damon Ramsey)
Friarbird
White-throated Honeyeater

The seed bowl attracts Crested Pigeon, as well as...

Two pigeons for the price of one! Above is a Bar-shouldered Dove, and below is a Peaceful Dove (Damon Ramsey)

Parrots also visit...

Red-winged Parrots visit the seed feeders.

Other birds that hang around the general area include...

Other visitors include Toressian Crow.
